True.com is one of the most popular and best all-around dating sites available on the Internet. Like other dating sites, putting up a profile and searching listings is free, and you only need to pay the monthly fee (7 days free, then $49.99) if you decide to make contact with another member.

The profile covers physical features, (height, weight, etc.), religion, occupation and other standard topics. You can include photos and even video or voice files (up to 1 mb) with your profile. And of course, you can write your own paragraphs about who you are and what kind of partner you are seeking.

For people who need a little help determining what exactly they are looking for, True.com offers one of the most comprehensive compatibility tests we have ever seen. It uses 99 psychological and relationship factors to evaluate your compatibility with other people. It does take some time to complete the test (plan on 15 - 30 minutes) and it is full of interesting questions (e.g. "is it okay to fib to get out of trouble?", "Is it ok to tell a white lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings?", etc.) While the test itself is excellent, we have found that few other members take it, so its use is somewhat limited unless you run across other members who have taken the test as well.

The search and compatibility matching features are generally quite good. You can do advanced searches using all the profile information, as well as a "keyword" search which is especially helpful if you have something specific in mind.

Perhaps the best thing about True.com is that they take special care to protect its members. There is a criminal background and marital status check done on all members, and people with felony convictions or married people (checked through public records) are not allowed to participate. This may sound a bit overly cautious, but if you consider that just about anyone can put up a profile and make any claim they want, it makes a lot of sense for a responsible dating service to take precautions for its members.
