OUR REVIEW: Lavalife is a highly popular dating site that encourages interaction among its members. Like most dating sites, it offers visitors the ability to search members for free and create an online profile, which can be listed in one of three communities:
Members can also upload pictures and videos to be available for public view or placed in a "backstage" area where people can view only after being invited to do so. Creating a profile is a very quick process, and only takes a couple minutes. The questions cover only the basics, but enough to reveal what type of person you are. The goal here is not to capture as much about a person as possible in a single profile, but rather to give just enough information to help people decide whether they want to start an interaction. Interactions can occur on many different levels, but include such methods as sending a message, sending a free "smile" (expression of interest), sending an Instant Message if the user is online, and contacting via phone. Lavalife even offers a feature called "Lavalife Mobile" which allows users to search profiles of exciting singles and exchange text messages anywhere, anytime, either via text messaging or WAP. Therefore, Lavalife's general philosophy is to get members to put up brief profiles, find each other, and interact in order to see if there is any chemistry. Lavalife offers a unique pricing structure that involves buying credits. This differs from most other dating sites, which operate on a monthly fee. At Lavalife, $14.99 buys you 50 "credits," which you can use for different types of interactions. For example, contacting one member via unlimited email is 6 credits, as is 20 minutes of Instant Messaging. Active users can purchase 200 credits for $39.99. This pay-as-you-go pay structure allows you to save credits for later months if you don't find anybody you like, which is not something you can do at other dating sites. In general, we found Lavalife to be rich with features, and fresh and interactive in its approach. Whereas other sites place much emphasis in detailed profiles or matchmaking, Lavalife leaves the matchmaking up to its members, who find each other and interact on their own.
